New Street Square's 'Green Wall' consists of a range of over 40 perennials, if not from A to Z then at least from Alchemilla mollis to Viburnum tinus: shrubs, ferns and grasses, planted into downward-inclined holes no more than 7cm deep built into a growing medium.
The plants are watered on an automated, daily basis. Further natural additions have already arrived via bird droppings and wind-blown seeding. During its "growing on" period in the nursery Robins and Finches nested in the wall, and it is anticipated that the wall will become a nest site from the Spring of 2009 onwards. Living proof that walls can be anything but a barrier to environmentally positive measures.
